Think Outside the Aisle

Last month was just the craziest month I've had all year. I shot this wedding in between trips to Chicago. I actually came back just to shoot the wedding. It was really my pleasure to make it back. Caity and Brody were the sweetest couple to work with. Their love and respect for one another was immense. It was obvious they both felt that they had won the ultimate prize by marring each other.

My only complaint about the day was the horrible lighting in the church. I'm a jpg. shooter but I switched to raw for the ceremony. The overhead lighting was pink and orange which is a photographers white balance nightmare! I also added a side light to give some separation and more light to the already harsh can lighting.  At the last minute I was given the unexpected invisible boundary speech by the church staff and told if I crossed it they would stop the ceremony. Come to find out I was only allowed in the aisle which for me is not my favorite place to be. I made it work by going outside and grabbing a few shots through the window so the couple would have more than one view of their ceremony. Think outside the aisle is what I say!

Happy Holidays!

Giggles and Guns!

So maybe giggles and guns isn't the best way to describe a happy couple in love but for Caity & Brody I think it somehow applies. Caity had more laughs and giggles than anyone I've ever shot. A true sweetheart! Brody was incredibly gentle and kind. Underneath though he is a secret bad ass that works with special opps in the military. A perfect match. Can't wait to shoot the wedding!

Runners Photo Group Zooey Deschanel Inspired.

If you've ever seen the movie "Yes Man" you probably remember Zooey Deschanel had a runners photography group. On this last photo shoot I couldn't help but think I was apart of her group while running and taking pictures. In my search I found an actual facebook group who has just such a group. Here's the link. They're based in Minneapolis so if anyone is ready to start an Orange county group let me know!

If you're looking for a group that works out for more than just a good laugh I'd recommend Rough Fit. Rough Fit is who this shoot was actually for. They're an Orange County based fitness group that focuses on getting in shape and developing healthy lifestyles even within our busy lives.

P.S. If you love indie music make sure you listen to Zooey Deschanel's band She and Him.

Kara & Chris

I had a great time with these two. Kara was a natural at being natural and it didn't take much for Chris to get totally lost in his soon to be bride. They had a little bit of a crazy story. Both of their parent went to the same high school in Michigan but neither knew the other. Several years later their kids are getting married in California. That's such a cool story. I would love to be able to go back in time and meet all of them to not only tell them who they would marry but also that their kids would marry.

Funny how life brings certain people together at just the right time.

It's still exciting 5 years in!

I shot my first wedding over 5 years ago and it amazes me that I still get excited about shooting weddings. I'm totally the guy who finds something new and lets it consume me till I'm bored of it. I thought for the longest time this was the case with photography. I still remember the 3 years of hesitating to jump both feet in, for fear that photography was just another fad for me. It's still seems fresh and new every time I shoot.

This last shoot felt like Christmas. I recently purchased a new Vagabond II for Mr. Paul C. Bluff in order to use my studio lighting outdoors. The outcome was a high drama, beautiful portraits. When Melissa and I were talking on the phone about the wedding she described her wedding as "classic." This was the word I took with me all day to capture her wedding, just the way she envisioned it!

Feel free to comment. I would love to hear your thoughts!

About Me

My photo
As a child I was the wild and crazy type. I desperately needed an outlet. Drawing might have worked had it not required so much sitting still. If only I had discovered photography earlier my poor mother would still have her natural hair color. (Sorry Mom) Photography is the creative outlet I was born to do. I love everything about it. It has taken me to so many places and allowed me to take part in the most significant moments of so many lives. I am a documenter of life.
